Relics of War is the thirteenth Legends of Ethshar novel. It was originally written as a serial, under the title Ishta's Companion, sponsored by online patrons and self-published by Lawerence Watt-Evans. Since it's original conception, it was variously titled A Stranger in the Forest, The Demon in the Forest, and Ishta's Playfellow.
It is set in 5018, not long after the Great War, in an area once controlled by the Northern Empire. A child befriends a mysterious stranger who isn't exactly human in the woods beyond the family farm.
This was the single oldest proposal LWE hadn't sold and was submitted to Lester del Rey. LWE had hopes to sell it as a YA novel but instead started it as the fifth of the Ethshar Serials.
